赤き黄金と四方位の神話：文明の根源的連鎖について

錬金術師達は、賢者の石を追い求めていました。 賢者の石は、不老不死と知恵をもたらすものだと信じられていました。 錬金術には西洋の系統のものと東洋の系統のものが存在します。 賢者の石が赤い色をしているのは、その材料が赤い色をした硫化水銀だからです。 硫化水銀は硫黄と水銀の化合物です。 錬金術では、硫黄は火に例えられ、水銀は水に例えられます。 その化合物は賢者の石と呼ばれ、別名を赤い黄金と呼びます。
古代中国では、錬金術は錬丹術と呼ばれました。 丹とは赤い硫化水銀の異称です。 錬丹を行う技術は仙術や方術と呼ばれ、不老不死薬は金丹と呼ばれました。 金丹は赤い黄金という意味です。 これを服用した者が仙人と呼ばれます。
北欧神話においては、赤い黄金はカワウソの賠償と呼ばれる神話に登場します。 あるときオーディンと旅をしていたロキという神が、カワウソを殺してしまいます。 しかしそのカワウソは、オトという者が魔法で変身した姿だったのです。 オトの父はオーディンの身柄を拘束し、ロキにカワウソの賠償を求めました。 そこでロキは、アールヴ(エルフ)の国に住ぶドヴェルグ(ドワーフ)のアンドヴァリの持つ赤い黄金を奪い、オーディンの身代金に充てました。 この赤い黄金は、竜に化身したオトの兄弟ファーヴニルによって永い時を守られていましたが、英雄シグルズ(ジークフリート)によって奪われてしまいます。 ジークフリートはこの竜を倒してその心臓を食べ、知恵を手に入れます。 そのとき竜の血を浴びて不死も手に入れたそうです。 伝説ではこの後、ジークフリートはその血を唯一浴びなかった箇所を狙われて、死んでしまいます。 その後赤い黄金はジークフリートの妻の兄弟に渡り、フン族(古代中国の漢と敵対した匈奴の一族)の計略(ジークフリートの元妻と結婚し、その兄弟を祝宴に招く)により、ジークフリートの義理の兄弟は囚えられますが、その兄弟の兄が弟の心臓を要求してこれを殺し、自分も自殺して赤い黄金の秘密を守りました。

司馬遷の史記、匈奴列伝より 『冒頓単于（前209-前174）の時、匈奴の騎兵隊は、西方の軍がすべて白馬、東方の軍がすべて青ぶちの馬、北方の軍がすべて黒馬、南方の軍がすべて赤みがかった栗毛の馬に乗っていた。』
旧約聖書ゼカリヤ書には、天の四方に向かう風と呼ばれる赤、黒、白、まだらの四種類の馬の引く戦車が登場します。
新約聖書ヨハネ黙示録には、赤、黒、白、青白の、世界の四分の一ずつを支配する馬が登場します。
古代インドには、マハーバーラタにも登場する、王者の行う祭式の中でも最高位のものとされる馬祀祭(アシュヴァメーダ)というものがありました。 それは太陽の象徴である神聖な馬を,東西南北の四方位に導く祭式です。 アシュヴァメーダの祭詞 『汝は天界に三個の親縁を有す。三個それは水中に。ゆえにヴァルナと同一』
エジプトはもともと太陽崇拝の国ですが、ピラミットの四辺は正確に東西南北に面しているそうです。 四辺＋頂点で、四角錐を作れますよね。 ちなみに、ピラミッドは中南米にもあります。
マヤ族の神話には、チャクと呼ばれる四方位神が登場します。 東のチャク・シブ・チャク(赤い人)、北のサク・シブ・チャク(白い人)、西のエク・シブ・チャク(黒い人)、南のカン・シブ・チャク(黄色い人)。
中国には東海青竜王・南海紅竜王・西海白竜王・北海黒竜王の、四海竜王の伝説があります。 玄武、青竜、朱雀、白虎の思想は、中国の戦国時代（前403－前221）頃に現われたそうです。 黒い玄武は北を表し、青い青竜は東を表し、赤い朱雀は南を表し、白い白虎は西を表します。 中国の四方位神の一人である白虎は、金星の化身とされ、艮(ウシトラ)方位の鬼門の魔神とされます。 白虎は別名を金神(こんじん)、太白(金星)、白帝、西海白竜王といいます。
アステカの神話では、四方位神の一人、西を守護する白いテスカトリポカ(ギリシア神話のプロメテウスのように、人類に文明と火を与えた白蛇神ケツァルコアトルの別名)の心臓が、炎の中で焼け残り、天に登って金星になったといいます。 ちなみに東を守護する赤いテスカトリポカ(別名はトナティウで人身御供を司る神)もいます。 アステカ人は、生きた生贄の心臓を太陽神に捧げていました。 伝説では、トピルツィン・ケツァルコアトルという、ケツァルコアトルの名を持つ首長は、生贄の風習に反対して敗れ、『黒と赤』の国に去ったそうです。

Red Gold and the Myth of Four Directions
Alchemists sought the Philosopher’s Stone, believed to grant immortality and wisdom. Alchemy exists in both Western and Eastern traditions. The Philosopher’s Stone is red because its primary ingredient is cinnabar (mercuric sulfide), a compound of sulfur and mercury. In alchemy, sulfur is likened to fire and mercury to water. Their union creates the Philosopher’s Stone, also known as “Red Gold.”
In ancient China, alchemy was called Waidan (External Alchemy). “Dan” is another name for red cinnabar. The techniques of alchemy were known as Xian arts or Fangshi, and the elixir of immortality was called Jindan (Golden Elixir), meaning “Red Gold.” Those who consumed it were called Xian (Immortals).
In Norse mythology, Red Gold appears in the myth of the “Otter’s Ransom.” While traveling with Odin, the god Loki killed an otter, which was actually the shape-shifted form of a being named Otr. Otr’s father detained Odin and demanded a ransom from Loki. To pay it, Loki stole the Red Gold of the dwarf Andvari, who lived in the land of the Elves (Alfar). This Red Gold was long guarded by Otr’s brother, Fafnir, who transformed into a dragon, but it was eventually seized by the hero Sigurd (Siegfried). By slaying the dragon and eating its heart, Sigurd gained wisdom; by bathing in its blood, he attained immortality—except for one vulnerable spot, which eventually led to his death.
Later, the Red Gold passed to the brothers of Sigurd’s wife. Through the schemes of the Huns (identified as the Xiongnu, rivals of ancient China’s Han dynasty), Sigurd’s brothers-in-law were captured. The elder brother demanded the younger’s heart to be cut out and then committed suicide, taking the secret of the Red Gold to his grave. Archeologically, these Huns are considered descendants of the Xiongnu who migrated from Asia to Europe. Under Modu Chanyu (r. 209–174 BC), the Xiongnu ruled all of Mongolia and defeated Liu Bang of the Han dynasty. In the Later Han period, the Xiongnu split into Northern and Southern branches. The Southern Xiongnu integrated with the Han people, while the Northern Xiongnu migrated to Kazakhstan in the mid-2nd century. The Huns who devastated 4th-century Europe are believed to be their descendants.
From Sima Qian’s Shiji: “During the time of Modu Chanyu, the Xiongnu cavalry rode horses of four colors: white in the west, blue-gray in the east, black in the north, and reddish-chestnut in the south.” In the **Book of Zechariah** (Old Testament), chariots appear pulled by four types of horses—red, black, white, and dappled—called the four winds of heaven. In the **Book of Revelation** (New Testament), four horses—white, red, black, and pale—appear, each ruling a quarter of the world.
In ancient India, the **Ashvamedha (Horse Sacrifice)**, mentioned in the *Mahabharata*, was the highest royal ritual. A sacred horse, symbolizing the sun, was guided in the four cardinal directions. From the Ashvamedha liturgy: “You have three connections in heaven; three in the water. Thus, you are one with Varuna.” In Egypt, a land of sun worship, the four sides of the **pyramids** are precisely aligned with the four cardinal directions. Notably, pyramids are also found in Mesoamerica. In **Mayan mythology**, the **Chaacs**, gods of the four directions, appear: Chac Xib Chac (Red Man) in the east, Sac Xib Chac (White Man) in the north, Ek Xib Chac (Black Man) in the west, and Kan Xib Chac (Yellow Man) in the south.
China has legends of the **Dragon Kings of the Four Seas**: Qinglong (Azure Dragon) of the East, Honglong (Red Dragon) of the South, Bailong (White Dragon) of the West, and Heilong (Black Dragon) of the North. The concepts of the Four Symbols—Xuanwu (Black Tortoise), Qinglong, Zhuque (Vermilion Bird), and Baihu (White Tiger)—emerged around the Warring States period (403–221 BC). **Xuanwu** represents the North, **Qinglong** the East, **Zhuque** the South, and **Baihu** the West. The White Tiger, one of the four direction gods, is seen as the incarnation of Venus and the demon of the “Demon Gate” (Northeast/Ushitora). It is also known as Konjin (Golden God), Taibai (Venus), and the White Emperor.
In **Aztec mythology**, the heart of the **White Tezcatlipoca** (an alias for **Quetzalcoatl**, the Feathered Serpent who, like Prometheus, gave fire and civilization to humanity) remained unburnt in the flames and ascended to heaven to become Venus. There is also a **Red Tezcatlipoca** (Tonatiuh) in the east, the god presiding over human sacrifice. Aztecs offered the hearts of living sacrifices to the sun god. Legend says a leader named **Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl**, opposing the practice of sacrifice, was defeated and departed for the “Land of Black and Red.”
