『アグニ(言語と火の神)は始め四つに分かれていた。彼らが最初にホートリ祭官の職に選んだアグニは逃れ去った。第二番目に選んだアグニも逃れ去った。第三番目に選んだアグニも逃れ去った。そこでこの現在のアグニは恐怖のために身をかくした。彼は水の中にはいった。彼を神々は発見して、無理に水から連れ戻した。』
『いかなる人にもあれ、その人が病患なく生存するようにと願うならば、その人に口を開かせて息を吹きかけるべきである。アムリタをもって実に彼に息を吹きかけることとなる。』
ウパニシャッド(前五世紀頃から形成される）
チャーンドーグヤ＝ウパニシャッドより
『人はヴァーナ（体気）こそウドギータ（サーマ・ヴェーダの吟誦）と崇むべきである。吸気がプラーナであり、呼気がアパーナであり、そしてプラーナとアパーナの結合がヴャーナである。ヴャーナとは言語である。その故に、人は呼吸することなく、言語を発する。』
『かの(白い)心臓には、神の出口が五つある。
その東の出口とは、プラーナ（吸気）であり、目であり、太陽である。
その南の出口とは、ヴャーナ（体気）であり、耳であり、月である。
その西の出口とは、アパーナ（呼気）であり、言語であり、火である。
その北の出口とは、サマーナ（腹気）であり、意であり、雨である。
その上の出口とは、ウダーナ（上気）であり、風であり、虚空(アーカーシャ)である。
ブラフマンのこれら五人の従者は天国の門番である。』
『(白い)心臓には褐色の微細な脈管がある。白色のもの、青色のもの、黄色のもの、赤色のものなどがある。この太陽も褐色であり、白色であり、青色であり、黄色であり、また赤色である。』
『(白い)心臓には百と一の脈管があり、それらの一つは頭から出ている。それを通って上昇し、不死に赴く。他の脈管はあらゆる方向に出口がある。』
『彼（プルシャ）にはヒターと称するそれらの脈管があり、一本の毛髪の千分の一ほどに微細で、白、青、黄、緑、赤色の液で満たされています。』
プラシュナ＝ウパニシャッドより
『かのアートマンは実に(白い)心臓の中にある。そこには101本の脈管があり、それらの一本ごとに百本ずつの小脈管があり、この小脈管の一本ごとにそれぞれ72000の毛細管がある。ヴァーナ（体気）はそれらの中を速やかに動きまわるのだ。次に、一本の脈管によってウダーナ（上気）は上昇し、善行によって福徳の世界へ、悪行によって禍悪の世界へ、善悪両行為によって人間の世界に導く。』
リグ・ヴェーダより(前1200年頃成立とされる）
『十二輻を有する天則の車輪は、天の周囲をたえず回転す、そは老朽におちいることなければ。子らは、アグニよ、対をなしてその上に乗りたり、720。』
『言語は四個の四分の一と測定せられたり。バラモン達は熟慮してこれを知る。三個は、秘密に隠されて運動せしめられず。言語の四分の一を人間は語る。』
『されどプルシャはさらに強大なり。万有は彼の四分の一にして、彼の四分の三は天界における不死なり。プルシャは四分の三をもって高く昇れり。彼の四分の一は、下界にありて新生せり。』

I. From the Brahmanas (c. 800 BCE)
“Agni (the god of speech and fire) was originally divided into four parts. The first Agni they chose for the office of Hotri fled. The second Agni they chose also fled. The third Agni they chose also fled. Therefore, the present Agni hid himself out of fear; he entered into the waters. The gods discovered him and forcibly brought him back from the waters.”
“If anyone desires to live without illness, one should cause that person to open their mouth and breathe upon them. Verily, one breathes upon them with Amrita (the nectar of immortality).”
II. From the Upanishads (c. 5th Century BCE)
Chāndogya Upanishad
“One should meditate on Vyāna as the Udgitha. Inhalation is Prana, exhalation is Apāna, and the junction of Prana and Apāna is Vyāna. Vyāna is speech. Therefore, one utters speech without breathing.”
“In that (white) heart, there are five divine openings.
Its eastern opening is Prana (inhalation), which is the eye, the Sun.
Its southern opening is Vyāna (diffused breath), which is the ear, the Moon.
Its western opening is Apāna (exhalation), which is speech, Fire.
Its northern opening is Samāna (digestive breath), which is thought, Rain.
Its upward opening is Udāna (upward breath), which is the wind, Space (Akasha).
These five servants of Brahman are the gatekeepers of the heavenly world.”
“In the (white) heart, there are minute channels of brown, white, blue, yellow, and red. This Sun also is brown, white, blue, yellow, and red.”
“There are one hundred and one channels of the (white) heart, and one of them leads out through the crown of the head. By moving upward through that channel, one attains immortality. The others lead out in all different directions.”
“He (Purusha) has those channels called Hita, as fine as a hair divided a thousandfold, filled with white, blue, yellow, green, and red fluids.”
Prashna Upanishad
“This Atman is indeed in the (white) heart. There are 101 channels, each with a hundred sub-channels, and each of these sub-channels has seventy-two thousand branch channels. Vyāna moves within them. Then, through one of these channels, Udāna leads upward to the virtuous world by good deeds, to the sinful world by evil deeds, and to the world of humans by both.”
III. From the Rig Veda (c. 1200 BCE)
“The wheel of Eternal Law (Rita) with twelve spokes revolves unceasingly around the heavens, for it is ageless. Upon it stand the children in pairs, seven hundred and twenty, O Agni.”
“Speech has been measured in four quarters. Brahmins who are wise know them. Three of these remain hidden in secret and are not set in motion. Humans speak only the fourth quarter of speech.”
“But Purusha is even greater. All beings are but one-fourth of him; his three-fourths are the immortal in heaven. With three-fourths, Purusha rose on high. One-fourth of him remains here below and is born again.”
